How to use the Photographers Time Difference Calculator

A short guide on how to use the Photographers Time Difference Calculator.

On the Event

Ask all the photographers to take a shot of the same clock. I strongly suggest you, that it is a digital clock equiped with seconds display.

That's all to be done on the event.

In Office

  1. Install the ExifTool on your computer (not really necessary if you do have another program for changing dates; only need to be done for the first time).
  2. Designate one of the cameras for main camera (camera0) and the second one for supplemental (camera1).
  3. Download the photos from all the cameras. For each camera use separate folder. Remember which folder has photos for which camera.
  4. Take the photos of the clock for each camera and write down:

    a. The date and time as seen from the clock (simply see the photo) b. The date and time camera thought it was taken (use some exif info tool to see; it should be displayed with seconds included). The file Properties tool should not be used as it displays only minutes and not also seconds.

  5. Enter the data into The Photographers Time Difference Calculator and press the button [Calculate ExifTool string]

  6. Use the data on the folder where pictures from supplemental camera (camera1) were stored.

If you need to synchronize between more cameras, you could synchronize them one-by-one. Just remember to keep main camera (camera0) always the same.
